Tromso- Bear Island- Spitsbergen 2014

A4. Tromso-Bear Island (Bjornoya)- Spitsbergen (Longyearbyen)

BereneilandWe embark in Tromsø where the sun seldom sets, leaving via the Grøtsundet to the Barendsz sea,
After sailing about 2 ½ days and nights we arrive at Bear Island, a triangular island about 120 M. south of Sørkapp, Spitsbergen’s most southerly point.

The Dutchman Willem Barendsz named this island in 1596.
We will visit this fascinating island, the home of a Norwegian radio and weather station. On the east coast some anchorages work for us and depending on the weather, we will remain for several hours or a night. In the spring and summer polar bears are uncommon here but the polar fox can be seen!
From this area, we proceed further north and pass beyond 75° latitude! After one day of sailing, we will spot the spectacular mountains of Spitsbergen. If possible, (which means not too much ice drift,) we will sail into the Hornsundet and Recherchefjord with its glaciers and ice walls!
Monday May 31 we arrive in Longyearbyen, the destination of this trip.
