Spitsbergen- Bear Island- Tromso 2014

A7. Longyearbyen, Spitsbergen-Bear Island-Tromso

Spitsbergen-TromsoOn June 29, we embark from Longyearbyen (Spitsbergen) and as the ice drift permits, for approximately 3 days, we will visit the Hornsundet and the Recherchefjord with their glaciers and ice walls! We can take some hikes and see the flowering tundras, fossils and remains from the time whaling was popular… Then we have to say good-bye to Spitsbergen and proceed south. After 1½ days of sailing, the mountains of Bear Island will appear on the horizon. Weather permitting, we will anchor on the east or west side and visit this island, named by the Dutchman Willem Barendsz in 1596. Of course we are going to take a hike here!
We will then sail further south towards the entrance of the fjord to Norway where we’ll see the first green mountains. We’ll sail the inner-water to the lifely town Tromsø, the arriving place for this trip.
