M11 Iceland – Faroe Islands – Shetland Islands – Scotland (?) – the Netherlands
September 16 – October 6, 2022
THIS TRIP IS CANCELLED!
This will be a spectacular sailing/walking tour along a number of special archipelagos: in addition to Iceland, we will visit the Faroe Islands and the Shetland Islands. Naturally, since we are guided by the weather especially the wind we will moor in easily accessible harbors/anchorages.
We start this sailing trip in Akureyri, a town on the north coast of Iceland, easily accessible by plane. Perhaps the wind will be favorable enough to pass by Grímsey Island, where the Arctic Circle crosses…!
Depending on the wind, we will sail along the east coast for a while; with favorable winds we may cross over to the very special Faroe Islands. There is a strong current between the islands of Strömö and Österö, so we will wait for a good time to pass through and then head to Tórshavn. We will stay here for a few days and everyone can explore the islands: on foot, with a rental car, a bus …
At a favorable moment in terms of wind and weather, we will cross over to the next archipelago: the Shetland Islands. We will also stay here for a few days, probably in the sheltered harbor of Scalloway (on the mainland). You will enjoy walking here in this beautiful and historic locale. Bus transportation and rental cars are readily available for you to explore the area!
After a few days we will leave this archipelago and set course for Northern Scotland. The wind will determine our course.
Finally, we will sail back along the eastern coast of Scotland and England to our destination of Enkhuizen/the Netherlands.
This 3-week trip is very suitable for bird watchers, sailors and hikers, who enjoy the sometimes strong weather!
