P7. Spitsbergen- Bear Island – Tromsø
The great expedition from Spitsbergen – Bear Island to Tromsø!
This beloved journey begins on Spitsbergen (Longyearbyen), where we have about 3 days time to enjoy the spectacular fjords with their large glaciers (Hornsund!), icebergs, (traces of) polar bears …
We’ll enjoy a nice combination of sailing and hiking.
When we board at 12:00 pm, we depart for the northern part of the Isfjord: Trygghamna. In this safe harbor, we’ll drop anchor and then go ashore.
Sometimes we see bearded seals, arctic foxes and walruses here.
The next day we sail towards the Recherche Fjord where we drop anchor at an old “shoreline”. Here you still can find fossils and we often see reindeer. With some luck, we’ll spot a polar bear foraging for food (!).
The next morning we leave for the Hornsund. We can visit this magnificent fjord as the weather and possible ice conditions allow, and afterward will make a beautiful trip alongside the impressive glaciers.
Bear Island
We’ll spend the night in the fjord and the next day leave Spitsbergen heading for Bear Island. This route is about 230 miles long: two days and two nights of sailing. Since we sail at a high latitude and in mid-summer, it’s still light at night. Arriving at Bear Island we’ll find a sheltered anchorage and if the weather is favorable, we’ll go ashore. It is is always fun to visit the weather station where the certificate “Nude Bathing at High Latitude” is available!
After having explored Bear Island we will again weigh anchor and cross over to the coast of Norway. We’ll sail for about 3 days non-stop to the Tjeldsundet and then on to Tromsø, arriving July 10 in the evening or July 11 in the morning.
